I had an interesting conversation about this subject recently and it really got me thinking about how I spend my time and how people historically used to spend their time.
If we look back to for example the Victorian era, pastimes tended to lean toward the “create” for example learning music, sewing tapestries, creating artwork etc. These days I think we are all “guilty” of leaning towards the “consuming” end of the spectrum of activities. I know I personally I can easily spend an entire evening “consuming” by passively watching Netflix and scrolling through Instagram.
This isn’t to say there is anything wrong with a relaxing evening absorbing others’ content, this post is more to prompt ourselves to QUESTION “how am I spending my time”? Once I paid attention to this concept, I looked at each activity as a “consume OR create”. Last night I spent two hours embracing craft and then after supper I snuggled up to the familiar comfort of my latest box set. I noticed I felt much more alert that evening and had more of a sense of satisfaction.
Professionally my career as a photographer is to continually create content… for people to consume… When I work I can definitely feel my brain entering a different mode, I’d imagine other creatives can relate to this?
I would be interested to hear what other people’s thoughts are on this subject?
